Welcome

You are at Marie's Quilt Show. This quilt show is in honor of Marie's 90th year.

The posts consist of a full view of the front of the quilt, 1 or more close-ups and a close-up of the quilt back. A click on any image will bring that image full-screen.

Please take your time and look as long as you would like. Come back often. We would ask that you comment on one or more quilts so that Marie will know you have been here.

It is with pleasure we share these beautiful quilts with you.

Sunshine and Shadows

"I did many rounded corners."

Double Wedding Ring

"I thought I may be making a mistake when I quilted this with red thread, but I like it."
Grandma Pope's pattern is in the center of the rings, and it has a straight edge.
"If anyone had any leftover material from sewing, I asked for it."

Sunbonnet Quilt

This is a friendship quilt that Marie encouraged her Gleaner Girls in Mutual to make. When she looked at the back and saw that instead of binding she had turned the back over the front, Marie said, "Oh, surely, I didn't!!"

Christmas Quilt

Double Wedding Ring

The gingham on the back gives it a dainty look. Grandma Pope made many Double Wedding Ring quilts -- all small. All the pieces were cut with scissors. Notice the scalloped edges. "I have 3 more like this. They are all made from scrap material. I used what we had".

Log Cabin - Barn Raising

This and the next Log Cabin quilt were made much the same but put together differently. Both are scrap quilts. (Scraps are pieces of new material left over from someone's sewing). "I like red centers".

Nursery Blocks

The nursery blocks were embroidered by Anita.

Grandma's Cameo Quilt

Anita embroidered and appliqued the blocks.

Card Trick

This quilt has a corded binding. "This is the best quilt I ever made. I didn't go to a store for any fabric. I used what I had on hand."

"This is a good one -- it was fun to do."

My Flower Garden

A lady from Fairview, Lynne Hodges, sent a quilt for the Garden City Relief Society to quilt. After it was quilted the Relief Society president sent it home with Marie to be bound. Marie used a silver spoon rubbed in her hair to take the patterns. Anita appliqued and embroidered the blocks. Marie put it together and quilted it. The quilt is 100% Indian Head cloth.

Log Cabin -- Velour

Marie made 5 of these great big, fuzzy, quilts.

Carpenter's Wheel

Log Cabin

The center star is put together like a pinwheel in contrast with the corner stars. There are over 3000 pieces in this quilt.

Double Wedding Ring

The Pioneer Trail pattern is quilted around the edge. See the variety of fabric patterns in this quilt. The back is gingham.

Tumbling Blocks or Baby Blocks

This quilt was hand tied with the International or Kosovo stitch.

Double Irish Chain

This quilt was pieced and quilted at the ranch in Sage, Wyoming. "All the quilts I worked before 1994 were measured and cut one piece at a time with scissors. In 1994 I acquired a cutting board and wheel, so most of my cutting now is done with the wheel."

Log Cabin -- Variation

There are squares, stars, tumbling blocks, broken stars, and diamonds; three colors of light blue, 3 colors of dark blue and maroon. "I cut and matched and sewed for such a long time that when I got most of the blocks and diamonds together, I put it in a box for several years. When I took it out of the box, I had forgotten how it was to go together. What a puzzle! But I'm happy with how it turned out."

Pinwheel

Seven Sisters

Log Cabin -- Stars

Mariners Compass

This quilt was made while Ben E and Marie lived on the ranch at Sage, Wyoming. Marie was alone much of the time and she kept herself busy. This quilt was not paper-pieced, but Marie doesn't remember how she put it together.

Carpenter's Wheel

Log Cabin

Notice the many, many different fabric patterns in this quilt. And don't miss the attractive border.

Log Cabin -- Velour

The soft velour material for this quilt was purchased at the Alcoe Store in Kemmerer. The material was on sale for $1 a yard. When I looked at the material, I liked the colors and selected what you see in the quilt. At the time I was choosing the material, another lady stood close by. She watched carefully. Finally she said to me, "What are you going to use all of that for?" I replied, "I don't know, but I'll find something." You are looking at the result of the "something" I decided to make.

My Rose

I love this one. This pattern was inspired by an Amish quilt that my friend bought and brought home from back East.

(Pattern From a Book)

See the cute corners.

Log Cabin -- Straight Furrows

There are 17 pieces in each block. There are 6120 pieces in this quilt plus the borders.

Many Stars

There are just as many pieces in each of the 12 stars in this quilt as there are in the large star quilts with only one star. The binding is done with cording. I made a snowflake pattern to quilt in the squares.

Broken Star

I made about 24 stars, but lacked one to complete a composition. I took all the stars apart and put them together this way (I didn't know at the time that there was a broken star pattern). All of the pieces are Hawaiian pieces from Mrs. Clara Kelley. I scalloped the edges; the white material came from Kemmerer. The pattern in the squares is what Grandma Pope used in her Double Wedding Ring quilts.
